So you’ve made the exciting decision to try for a baby but what you thought would happen “naturally” and without too much effort has started to become complicated.

When trying to get pregnant the advice can be overwhelming.

Maybe you've jumped online and asked google how to improve your chances when trying to get pregnant and Acupuncture has come up. Or maybe your sister-in-law has told you all about her best friend who had acupuncture when trying to conceive. Whatever has brought you here most people have the same questions

How exactly can acupuncture help when you're trying to conceive? Below I explore the science, tradition, and benefits of this gentle, non-invasive therapy when trying to get pregnant.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body to restore balance and promote the body’s natural healing processes. The basic theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is that energy (or "qi") flows through meridians in the body, and blockages or imbalances can lead to health issues—including fertility challenges.

From a Western perspective, acupuncture is thought to stimulate the nervous system, increase blood flow, and regulate hormones—all key factors in reproductive health.

How Does Acupuncture Supports Fertility?

Regulates Menstrual Cycles and Ovulation

Acupuncture has been shown to help regulate menstrual cycles, especially in women with irregular periods due to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
A 2023 systematic review in Frontiers in Endocrinology found that acupuncture significantly improved menstrual frequency and ovulation rates in women with PCOS compared to no treatment or sham acupuncture.(Li et al., 2023)

Enhances Uterine and Ovarian Blood Flow

Improved blood circulation to the reproductive organs supports the development of a healthy uterine lining and ovarian function, both of which are essential for successful conception.
A study in Fertility and Sterility found that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the uterus by reducing uterine artery blood flow impedance, making the environment more receptive to embryo implantation.(Stener-Victorin et al., 1996)

Reduces Stress and Cortisol Levels

Stress can interfere with ovulation and hormone regulation. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce stress by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system and lowering cortisol levels.
A 2011 study published in Fertility and Sterility reported that women undergoing acupuncture had significantly lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to controls.
(Domar et al., 2011)

Regulates Hormonal Function

Acupuncture affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, which controls reproductive hormones. This helps in balancing estrogen, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone levels naturally. A study published in Gynecological Endocrinology found that electroacupuncture influenced hormone levels (including LH and estrogen) in women with ovulatory dysfunction.
(Chen et al., 2008)

Improves Male Fertility Parameters

Fertility is a shared journey, and acupuncture benefits men too. Studies have shown it can improve sperm count, motility, and morphology. A 2005 study in Fertility and Sterility showed that acupuncture significantly improved sperm motility and morphology in infertile men after five weeks of treatment.(Pei et al., 2005)

When to Start Acupuncture for Fertility

Although there is no wrong time to start acupuncture, in an ideal world I recommend beginning treatment at least 3 months before trying to conceive, as this aligns with the lifecycle of egg and sperm development. Consistent weekly sessions can help regulate cycles and optimise reproductive health.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your treatments will centre around  providing a safe and calm environment for you to share your health journey, feel supported and relax.

Your treatment will include

Most people find treatments relaxing, with minimal discomfort. Many even fall asleep during sessions.
